Read to them every day.

Give them plenty of love and encouragement.

Set some simple rules and stick to them.

See that your child gets enough sleep. Young children should be in bed by 8:00 or 8:30. They are growing and their bodies need sleep. You are an adult and you need and deserve some time to yourself. It may take as long as a month to get your child on a schedule but keep on trying. It is important for both of you.

Talk to your child and explain things to them. You are your child's first and most important teacher.

Listen to your child. They are willing and able to have very interesting conversations.

Be patient. Everyone has their difficult days.

Teach them respect for others.

Be proud of your child and show it. This builds their self-esteem.

Be a good role model for your child. Remember how you looked up to your parents and grandparents and wanted to be just like them? Your child feels the same way about you.

Give them a few simple chores to do around the house. It teaches them responsibility to the family.

Play simple games with children that encourage skills like counting, looking for colors or letters, guessing, hopping, walking on tiptoes, and sorting. Praise them for their efforts and let them know it is okay to get something wrong and try again.

Volunteer in the classroom. Go see what they are learning. Remember that they are still learning and practicing their skills.

Remember to read to them daily. It is the single most important thing you can do to help prepare your child for school.

And always, always, love your children and let them know it.
